When setting the piston at TDC I was rotating the crankshaft clockwise instead of counter clockwise. Found somewhere that I was supposed to turn it counter clockwise and all is well now. Measure and adjust the clearence when the rocker arm pad is on the bottom of the cam. Check the clearances of numbers 1, 2, 3 and 5 valves by inserting the blade or blades of a feeler gauge between the rocker and valve stem.
