Just need to abide by Inyo’s permit requirements and be out in ~35 days (or whatever the limit is).I carry eight main stakes for the four corners, doors, and peak guyouts, and two secondary stakes for the short wall midpoints. For my main stakes, I like 6" blue Eastons and Ti hooks for the secondary stakes. I did JMT mid July 2019 (high snow year) and the passes all had snow, big rivers were about thigh deep, lots of wet feet and mosquitoes, but totally doable for most experienced backpackers.

I have hiked the JMT in every summer month and September is closet to July in temps but less storms. You can hike with food outside your canister, but at night it needs to be in a canister, in a bear box, or hung. With the amount of people hiking not only the JMT but also the pct, it's pretty easy to join groups along the way. It's a very safe trail. I find that solo hikes don't tend to be as solo as one would expect, which is great!
